ADIREM
The Institutes for Research on Mathematical Education (IREM), university institutes, exist since 1970. They combine on the long term teachers from primary, secondary and tertiary levels. The 28 IREM in France are ruled by the Assembly of the Directors of the IREM (ADIREM) and a Scientific Board.
They have close relations with 18 IREM abroad.
Their missions
- Research works on problems issued from mathematics teaching;
- In-service mathematics teacher training;
- Production and diffusion of pedagogical resources (articles, booklets, textbooks, periodical, softwares, multimedia products, etc.).
Their objectives
- Help developing research in epistemology, didactics of mathematics and pedagogy while enhancing cooperative works between researchers, innovators, teacher trainers and teachers;
- Allow experiments of new pedagogical devices and the diffusion of the results (positive or negative) of these innovations;
- Help teachers in improving their teaching so that students acquire a deep understanding of what a scientific approach is;
- Help students in building a rationality adapted to their role as citizen (be able to give rough estimations, to interpret a formula or a table, to feel whether a reasoning is plausible or evidently false, to point out the constraints and the ambiguities, etc.).
The IREM function through a network
It allows to articulate the work of about a thousand of teachers, divided among seventeen commissions. The commissions can focus on a teaching level (primary school &endash; under 11 &endash; lower secondary school &endash; 11/15- General and vocational upper secondary school &endash; 15/18), a theme (teacher training, didactics, epistemology and history, geometry, mathematics and experimental sciences, mathematics and computer science, MathenPoche &endash;mutualist software- statistics and probabilities, images and mathematics, mathematical competitions), or organise the diffusion of works of the IREM (Publimath is a bibliographical data base and Repères is the national journal of the IREM)
